Roméo et Juliette

If you’re going to die, do it as a duet! On the occasion of the Paris World’s Fair in 1867, the world’s most famous lovers once again received the attention they deserved: Charles Gounod composed an opera from the Shakespeare story – rich in melody and sensual. Peppered with attractive vocal parts, it still occupies a firm place in the 19th century French repertoire today. Instead of a bloodthirsty ending, Gounod concludes “Roméo et Juliette” with a duet in which the lovers sing themselves to death together.
